OpenAI just announced ads are coming to ChatGPT, which is game changing for paid media. Here’s what we know so far.
ChatGPT has won the hearts of internet users across the world, having 10% of the global population actively using it, and 2.29% using it every single day (source: https://www.superlines.io/articles/chatgpt-statistics).
It’s been ad free to date, but OpenAI just announced adverts are coming, full article here: https://openai.com/index/our-approach-to-advertising-and-expanding-access/
This is a MASSIVE opportunity for advertisers to appear within the AI giant’s results without time consuming organise optimisations – you’ll be able to buy your way into the listings just like Google (but with some differences, we’re sure!).
What we know so far:
1: OpenAI have been very clear in the announcement that ads will not interfere or influence the results:

This is important because ChatGPT has become a trusted source or even seen as a friend by millions across the globe. So, whilst OpenAI do not want to jeopardise the users trust, they do want to start making some serious money.
2: Testing is starting in the US imminently, and ads could look like this:

The ads don’t appear at the top like traditional PPC search ads, which is interesting – they’re shown within the content of the AI response.
3: Relevancy is still key.
As always with paid media, being relevant to what the user is looking for will win. We don’t know how we’ll bid or target specific searches just yet, but ChatGPT’s number one goal will be to keep people using it, so it is unlikely to surface any poorly design ads, or irrelevant content.
4: Images are just an important as copy
Based on the previews so far, images will be displayed alongside ad copy, meaning advertisers need to prioritise both ad copy and images to hit the ground running when it launches.
5: The big players Google & Meta will lose market share to this. Not only in terms of share prices but share of advertiser budgets. A chance to advertise on a highly trusted platform with little early competition – yes please!!!
So, in the words of Noel Mack, ‘Get your towel down early!’
How can we get started?
We can’t yet, we don’t even know where campaigns will be based, but our suspicions are Microsoft Ads will become the platform you can buy the space from.
We suspect this because Microsoft holds around 27% stake in the AI giant OpenAI, so it’s perfectly suited as an already established platform (source: https://openai.com/index/next-chapter-of-microsoft-openai-partnership/). This could be game changing for Microsoft ads, and if you haven’t already got an account setup, we recomend doing so asap so you’re ready to activate when it becomes available.
